    What Is Hazardous Material?

Hazardous material is any item or agent (biological, chemical, radiological, and/or physical), which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors.

    How to Assess Hazardous Material

Assessing hazardous materials involves a systematic process to identify, evaluate, and manage potential risks associated with these materials.

This streamlined process helps organizations systematically assess and manage hazardous materials to protect the health and safety of workers and the environment.

    Hazardous Material Removal Process

    Identify and Inventory

Identify and list all hazardous materials present, including their quantities and locations.

    Review Safety Data

Obtain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each hazardous material to understand their properties, and handling procedures.

    Risk Assessment

Evaluate the potential risks associated with each material, considering factors like toxicity, flammability, and reactivity.

    Exposure Assessment

Assess how individuals might be exposed to the hazardous materials and the severity of potential exposures.

    Control Measures

Implement control measures to minimize risks, such as engineering controls, safe work practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Keep thorough records of the assessment process, including and establish a monitoring program to ensure ongoing safety and compliance.

    Bats on a Wall

What Are Common Examples of Hazardous Material?

If you have bats in the attic of your home or building, then you have large piles of guano, or waste, as well. Besides making your house smell bad, guano can cause a lung infection called histoplasmosis which is caused by inhaling the spores of a fungus that is carried in bat guano.

Pests, such as cockroaches, are also attracted to guano, causing even more infestation. In addition, the droppings and urine can corrode wood and drywall.

Exposure to rodent, bird & bat droppings and nesting materials under ideal conditions can result in several diseases, including histoplasmosis, Newcastle disease, cryptococcosis, pseudotuberculosis, and other avian-transmitted diseases.

Another major condition of concern would be hypersensitivity pneumonitis. This disease is generally contracted by inhaling a specific type of bacteria (thermophilic actinomycetes).

The presence of nesting birds in any portion of a building HVAC system, and the potential introduction of the associated diseases that they cause, become a real concern. These possibilities demonstrate why disinfecting rodent-infested areas is so important in preventing transmission of the virus.

    Safely Removing Guano

Safely removing guano involves assessing the contamination, wearing protective gear like gloves and respiratory protection, and containing the affected area to prevent the spread of contaminants. Proper cleaning solutions should be used to clean surfaces and guano must be properly disposed of according to local regulations.

Guano (rodent, bird, and bat feces) and other organic matter (feathers, bones, body parts, carcasses, etc.) pose a health threat to human beings who come in contact with them or inhale airborne particles from them.

Every precaution should be taken to ensure that workers and building occupants are protected from the diseases carried or transported by rodents, birds &/or bats.
